The Chemistry Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is an ACS-approved degree. ACS, the American Chemical Society, is the world's largest scientific society. The ACS holds national and regional chemistry conventions, publishes a wide range of chemical journals and other materials and provides many other services for its members. The ACS also promotes excellence in chemistry education by administering approval of undergraduate programs. ACS-approved programs are officially recognized by the American Chemical Society as offering a high-quality undergraduate program in chemistry.
Employers realize that graduates of approved programs have better preparation for technical employment. Some companies offer higher starting salaries to certified degree holders than to non-certified classmates.
The undergraduate program has been designed to prepare students for the challenges that face the chemist in modern society. Graduates may go directly into industry or may continue their education at the graduate level in chemistry, medicine, dentistry, or other fields. Both lectures and discussion sections in most first and second-year courses are conducted by faculty members who bring to the subject their experience in teaching and research to help make students aware of current developments in the field. Faculty direct laboratories as well, and with the aid of teaching assistants are able to give individual attention to smaller groups of students during laboratory sessions.
Upper-level courses are conducted in small groups under almost tutorial conditions. Active research participation by undergraduate students is highly encouraged. Working closely with individual faculty members in the laboratory, students attain a high level of scientific experience and professional maturity.
Students completing a degree in chemistry will:
- Learn the basic canon of chemistry, covering the five fundamental sub-fields as recommended by the American Chemical Society: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry.
- Conduct original chemical research and report their results orally and in writing to scientific audiences.
- Learn and apply the principles of scientific ethics with regard to the use of sources, generating and reporting of data, and collaboration with colleagues.
- Develop an understanding of green chemistry and environmental responsibility.
- Upon graduation, be prepared to practice as a professional chemist, whether in further study or in the workforce.
